Are Chemicals getting in your Organic Foods also?
By now we have sufficiently proven that chemicals create a lot of toxicity in the human body even if a person is exposed to them in smaller quantities. The reality is that our lives have become over laden with chemicals. It is definitely not just difficult but almost next to impossible to actually extricate ourselves from the detrimental effects of all the chemicals. In this article we shall explore an angle, which is overlooked for most part. Rather, it would not be going too far to say that a blind eye is conveniently turned towards this issue.
In order to avoid toxic chemicals many people are changing over to using organic food products. This is in fact, one of the most constructive things that they can do to save themselves. Going organic is the right choice for everyone. But, the way you cook your organically generated foods may also be introducing toxic chemicals in your diet. Ever wondered about how this may happen? Read on you shall find some startling facts.
Thyroid is one life style disease that has taken over the world like a storm. Women in their middle ages are especially prone to the disease. A British study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives has found that the people with high levels of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in their blood also have higher rates of thyroid disease. PFOA is a chemical used in the production of many industrial and consumer products including non-stick cookware, stain-resistant carpet coatings, and fabric waterproofing treatments. Although thyroid is more common in women still the link between PFOA and thyroid disease is potent enough to produce the disease equally in men folk too. Tamara Galloway, lead author of the study and professor of ecotoxicology at Exeter University, explained that further research is needed to determine exactly how the chemicals affect people’s bodies. But this explanation is being taken as a feeble attempt at avoiding a direct link between PFOA and thyroid disease by the scientific community by and large.
Between 1999 and 2006 around 4000 US adults over the age of 20 years were tested for PFOA and assessed for thyroid function. Researchers found that those with the highest blood serum levels of PFOA, above 5.7 nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml), were twice more likely to have thyroid disease than those with the lowest levels below 4.0 ng/ml. The connection between toxic chemicals especially of PFOA and thyroid disease cannot be negated anymore. Still, this is one area that is not much talked about. Neither do we hear about many exploratory research studies happening in this field.
Since our non-stick cookware is coated with a layer of chemicals, of which PFOA forms a main part, aren’t there any chances that we may be having a potent thyroid causing proposition right in our kitchens?
While we at Health & Wealth Centre certainly do not wish to cause an alarm by doomsday predictions, this positively, is a point that needs further pondering and prodding, in our opinion. Don’t you think so also?
After all, it seems like quite a possibility that all our efforts in using organic foods may be going down the drain because of the cookware that we may be using.
